Choose Light.
With smoky skies above, I thought we all could use a little Friday inspiration.
Here's a great one from students.
Check out this video with straight talk from middle-schoolers about race and what it's like to grow up in racially charged times from Being 12 series: STUDENT VIDEO
We all have our own stories that relate to these feelings of belonging. When my own biracial parents decided to immigrate our family to America when I was eight, I too felt "different". No one that I met at school (and to this day) had a dark-skinned father from Pakistan and a white-skinned mother from Switzerland. I wish I had heard these student voices then, I would have played the video many times after school! These students remind us that our differences are our strengths. Our power is truly in our unity. Everyone belongs.
If I have the honor of being chosen by YOU as a School Board Trustee this November, one of my missions would be to help our district shine the light more on our STUDENTS and EDUCATORS. Elevate them so they can teach us. In our new PreK-8 world-class unified school, our students' voices, ideas, and solutions around race, equitable education, climate, multicultural healthy food, compassionate communities, and much more will form a beacon of LIGHT for 94965 that shines across our Nation. I truly believe sharing our light IS the higher calling of our community.
To get there, I think it's about all of us choosing today to follow LIGHT and POSITIVITY. Trust it will guide us to a better place in creating one inclusive school community.
Joe Biden said it so well last night,
"Give people light and they will find a way.....For love is more powerful than hate. Hope is more powerful than fear. Light is more powerful than dark. This is our moment. This is our mission. May history be able to say that the end of this chapter of American darkness began here tonight as love and hope and light joined in the battle for the soul of the nation. And this is a battle that we, together, will win."
This is our moment. We the people of 94965.
Choose light,
